Period Homes

Choosing a new floor for a cottage or older house starts with understanding what is already there.

01

Look at the existing floor

Before covering an old floor, consider its condition and any original features you want to keep. Uneven levels, movement and previous repairs can affect the choices available.

02

Raise moisture concerns early

If you have damp patches, a history of leaks or an older ground floor, flag it before ordering. Ask an appropriate building specialist about unresolved moisture or conservation concerns, rather than assuming a new covering will solve them.

03

Work with the room’s proportions

Compare the scale of planks, tiles and patterns against the room. A small sample can look quite different when repeated across a hallway or a large living space.

04

Consider the staircase

A runner can leave timber visible at the sides, while a fitted carpet gives a different finish. Turns, uneven treads and landings need measuring before a design is chosen.

Before you choose

Understand the existing floor first, then choose materials and patterns that suit the house and the way you use it.
